Here are examples of my image correction skills using Photoshop5.5:

This is the original photo, taken inside an army-surplus tent. The light was beautifully diffuse, but a terrible color.
I selected the bride, corrected her color, dropped out the background and replaced it with a gradient.
Mr. Wiz was taken in front of a window. The window is gone! and the robe is purple.
This drawing had oil spilled on it. Scanning it into the computer also emphasized the uneven tone of the paper, smudges and dust.
The image is much crisper with the dust and oil lifted out. The oil is still faintly visible in the detailed section of the hair, but lends texture rather than detracting as it did before.
